The clown at the birthday party, the Broadway show, your friends fighting over the last potato chip—all of these are forms of entertainment. From the Old French entretenir, to support or hold together, the word entertain carries with it the idea of amusement and distraction. We think of theatrical entertainment as shows or performances, visual entertainment as stuff to look at, and audio entertainment as music, but the line between these types is blurry. Entertainment often hits on the things that our brains were shaped to deeply react to. Backstabbing and murder are common themes in entertainment.
