Daily News

Daily News is an American newspaper founded in 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson, publisher of the Chicago Tribune. Patterson hoped to take advantage of the growing popularity of tabloid newspapers in New York City by creating a large-circulation paper that would focus on scandalous and titillating stories, as well as offering reader contests and cartoon strips. The first daily newspaper printed in tabloid format, the New York Daily News quickly became a dominant force in the New York media scene. In 1947, the Daily News reached its peak circulation of 2.4 million daily, making it the largest newspaper in the United States at that time.

The paper was an early adopter of the Associated Press wirephoto service, and devoted much time and energy to investigative reporting. The Daily News developed a reputation for being a champion of the First Amendment, and was especially outspoken against police brutality and other abuses of power in New York City. It was also known for its coverage of the Civil Rights Movement, and the newspaper was a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists. The Daily News was one of the pioneers in electronic publishing, and was the first metropolitan newspaper to produce its entire contents on a fully automated system.

In the 1990s, the Daily News continued to gain prominence, and was among the few mainstream publications that regularly won Pulitzer Prizes for editorial writing. It was especially lauded for its coverage of the AIDS epidemic, and for its sensitive reporting on the murder of Abner Louima. The paper was also a strong supporter of gay rights, and pushed for equal opportunities in the workplace.

By the end of the millennium, however, the newspaper began to suffer from the rapid rise of the Internet and online news. Its circulation fell to below a million in 2016, and the loss of advertising revenue threatened the newspaper’s survival.

As a result, the newspaper made major changes in staff and management. In 2017, the Daily News was sold to Tronc, a Chicago-based media company.
