Business news covers a broad range of topics that are of interest to both the general public and those in the field of business. This category of news can include anything from company profit reports to the latest stock market trends. Business news is one of the most commonly followed categories of news and can be found in newspapers, magazines, online and on television. The history of business news goes back to the 1700’s when Daniel Defoe began publishing financial and business reports. Later in the 1800’s Charles Dow, Edward Jones and Charles Bergstresser established a wire service that delivered business news to investment houses along Wall Street. By the 1900’s the newspaper industry had expanded to where it could offer specialized business news coverage in addition to general news.
The term business means the operation of commercial, industrial or professional activity for the purpose of making a profit. This can include activities such as selling goods and services, trading securities, leasing property, operating restaurants or even offering advice and guidance to people in their career development. Businesses can be for-profit or not for-profit. For-profit businesses generally return any profits to their investors while not for profit companies invest their profits back into the company or into social projects such as improving infrastructure and enhancing education.
While some people may operate a business out of their own home, most business owners run their operations as a business. They employ employees, pay taxes and insure their business against loss. They also make purchases of equipment and supplies, hire consultants and contractors and lease office space. Most business owners have a goal of turning a profit, but they don’t always succeed. Some companies fail within the first few months while others remain successful for years or even decades. Whether a business succeeds or fails is usually dependent on the skill of the manager and the quality of the product or service offered to customers. Many people become entrepreneurs because they want to be their own bosses and have freedom to work on the terms that they choose. Often, however, those same people struggle with finding the right balance between personal and business life. This is often the source of conflict and stress for both the entrepreneur and their family. The business world is full of stories of success and failure. People can find inspiration in the successes of others and learn from their mistakes.
